Hollins gave evidence of “unacceptable press behaviour” and the intrusion her family experienced in 2005 after her daughter was stabbed and left paralysed. She gave evidence later in 2012 complaining that fabricated stories about her son had appeared in the Daily Mail.

McLaughlin was Professor of Criminology at the School of Arts and Social Sciences of City, University of London at the time of giving evidence. Together with Dr Greer (later Professor Greer), he submitted extensive academic research on the changing nature of news media/police-chief relations in the wake of phone-hacking, "trial by media" and hostile relations between press and police on issues of race.
