Prime Minister of UK and Leader of Labour Party 2007 - 2010, prior to which he was Chancellor of the Exchequer in Blair Government from 1997 - 2007. Brown was a Member of Parliament from 1983 - 2015, first for Dunfermline East and later for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath. Stood down as MP in 2015. Brown criticised the Sun for use of unauthorised information about his son's medical details and accused Rupert Murdoch of lying on oath. He criticised James Murdoch of "breathtaking arrogance" and claimed that the Conservative Party adopted all the policies put forward by the Murdoch company.
Retired senior Scottish police officer, House was the first Chief Constable of Police Scotland, appointed October 2012. Awarded Queen's Police Medal in 2005 for distinguished service and knighted in 2013 for services to law and order. Gave evidence on procedures and relationship with the press in Strathclyde.
McLellan was editor of The Scotsman and Scottish Conservative Party media chief at the time of the Inquiry. He gave extensive evidence on the ethical codes and practices operating at The Scotsman. The wrongdoing that resulted in the News of the World�s closure were a shock to journalists outside Fleet Street, he told the Inquiry: "The press serving smaller communities � had a very good reputation for behaving responsibly and ethically."
Established in 1913 by Andrew Carnegie, Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist. The Carnegie Trust works to seek the improvement of the well-being of the masses by investing in areas such as libraries and public spaces as well as education, social work and children’s rights. Gave evidence to the Inquiry on “the public interest” and possible ways of defining it.
Editor and Writer. At the time of the Inquiry, Linklater was Editor of the Scottish edition of The Times. Gave statement to the Inquiry after an earlier witness suggested he had written an article under pressure from an editor or owner. He confirmed his authorship and made clear the work was his alone. He has been a regular contributor to The Times and is the author of several books including a biography of Jeremy Thorpe.
